Last night I had the opportunity to teach a women’s self-defense workshop at Kommunity Kuwait. The main focus of the workshop was to introduce women to self-defense techniques that are based on principles of jiu-jitsu. We talked about how to make yourself a hard target and went over different techniques that can be used in someone grabs you – by the wrist, by the hair, by the throat. We also talked about how to set and defend your boundaries and covered some physical techniques on how to react if anyone encroaches your safe space.
It was so great seeing these women take a chance and come out and try something new. Although I had only intended on focusing on standing self-defense techniques, by the end of the workshop, the women were so pumped up that they were ready to look at ground techniques as well. That enthusiasm and curiosity is exactly what jiu-jitsu gives you.
